A word in honor of the founder and first president of Sports to Hope, Dervy Gomes de Souza.
Dervy Gomes
There is much to be said about Dervy Gomes, an upright and God-fearing man, with impressive perseverance.
I had the privilege and joy of living with Dervy Gomes for most of my life, in fact, for more than 50 years together. A harmonious and happy marriage, where we could share many projects that God placed in our hearts.
God gifted us with a beautiful family made up of 4 children, 3 genders, 1 daughter-in-law and 13 grandchildren. I am so grateful to God for this and I joyfully recognize that everything we experienced was extremely precious considering the difficult times of this chaotic world.
Dervy Gomes had a strong characteristic of cultivating, helping and promoting great projects to strengthen the unity of God’s church. It was through his professional training in Communication and Marketing that he participated and worked in the main and large philanthropic and social organizations in Brazil and that he developed in his heart the strong desire to found a genuinely Christian organization that would reach out to children and adolescents from less favored areas, providing them with a dignified and healthy life, through sports and instilling faith and values in their hearts.
After several failed attempts and due to the difficulties faced in doing so, this dream remained dormant for years, but it always bothered him because he recognized the urgency and the need that moved him.
When God gave us the opportunity to live in the USA for a while, he felt the direction to continue this project by inviting two friends who embraced the vision and thus started the organization of Sports to Hope.
Since then, many brothers and sisters of the Body of Christ have engaged as partners, ambassadors, donors, and volunteers, both in Brazil and in the USA, Portugal, Spain, England, and several other countries to raise up the mission of Sports to Hope.
If it weren’t for these collaborators, this vision would not have advanced with such great success in these 6 years of existence. What struck me most in all of this was seeing the smile on his face and the satisfaction of the results achieved in these needy communities, through the help sent through Sports to Hope.
Dervy’s heart beat strongly for this ministry that blesses lives. His mind and efforts come together and produce new ideas and strategies to advance even further. Thus, plans were realized and more communities were reached.
But that year, in January 2025, we were approached by Dervy Gomes’ call to meet the Father. Like every sudden event, his departure was something that shook me tremendously and my entire family, including the great family of faith spread throughout the world.
However, this fact gave me a great desire and a very strong inner truth to ensure the continuity of this ministry and its path, realizing the plans and dreams that still sprouted within his restless heart, full of compassion and security.
Thus, through this testimony, I want to honor the life and all the commitments that Dervy dedicated to founding and developing this organization that has transformed the lives of hundreds of children and adolescents through sports and the light that comes from knowing Jesus Christ, our Savior.
I also want to invite you to be a donor in this vision and participate with us in this journey of excellence winning souls for the Lord Jesus Christ.

Friends. I had the privilege of meeting my friend, Devy Gomes, at the Miami Airport about 20 years ago. It was easy to develop a friendship with Dervy. I served as his driver. Dervy taught me how to deal with people because he was an exceptional leader. Dervy was a serious and yet cheerful man with an infectious smile. We will miss his leadership and love for the Lord.

Dervy was an admirable man, and I had the privilege of serving with him at Sports2Hope. He was a visionary and dedicated. He had a big heart and a deep desire to help others. In meetings, he always led with a great sense of humor and was an outstanding leader for us.

Dervy, as founder of Sports to Hope, naturally had the incredible and passionate vision for this mission, but what I found remarkable, is his encouragement and enthusiastic praise for every action I took for the mission, even when I thought I was undeserving of such praise!”
